»And then when we leave someday, you’ll miss us, ‘cause We are aliens.«

We are aliens – this phrase from Marteria’s song »Aliens«, if you just let it sink in for a moment, has the potential to constitute a whole philosophy, an attitude towards life, or even religion. Who are we? Where are we going? Where do we come from? Who is meant by »We« in the first place?

Due to societal, cultural, political and/or scientific opinions, the word »alien« has a quite negative connotation; the word is typically associated with something strange or even evil. However, if you look at the English meaning of the word, you will notice that the term »alien« is synonym for foreign, unfamiliar, or external. The word is derived from the Latin alienus, which can be easily translated as foreign. As a usual consequence, it is merely due to the established, all-pervasive human fear of the unknown and unfamiliar that the mere word alien instantly represents a threat to humans. »We are aliens« – provocation or redeeming fact?

The alien motif has been used and reappraised over and over again by a bunch of artists. DENKSTAHL has dedicated various of his works to the alien trope. When looking at these pictures, it is noticeable that they possess an intense effect, an unspeakable depth. They radiate something that goes far beyond an alien threat.

I have tried to grasp the intangibility and indefinability of these images: significance or perhaps relevance? Relevance for sure. It may be quite relevant to recognize, or even more, to appreciate the importance and significance of the foreign. His latest work Friendly Encounter Of The Third Kind (orig. »Freundliche Begegnung der dritten Art«) seems to present a finale to his entire examination of »the aliens«, to contain precisely this appreciation of the unknown and the alien, and to break with its negative connotation.

Digital Art – Unique Piece, 110×150 cm

Artists, free spirits, pioneers, poets and thinkers, rebels, outsiders, big and small, bright and dark stars – all living beings. We can assume that most people have already asked themselves at least once in their lifetime why they are mismatching. Asking yourself why you are so different from everyone else, why you feel like an alien, doesn’t seem surprising.

Of course, self-doubt, uncertainty, all those intangible questions, and the feeling of strangeness are something … unpleasant? Because we are so strange to ourselves? If one distances oneself for a moment from these emotions as well as the all-encompassing question, which ultimately underlies it, one can be assured there are numerable matters, which are indeed unknown to us. Unknown is however not to be equated with fear.

The controversial alien. On the one hand an approach of conspiracy theory and on the other hand a specific way of personal expression, that one is different. That We is different? That We are different? Different from whom? From the aliens? Most probably!

The alien. The other. The unknown. Appreciation of the alien in ourselves as in all that surrounds us. It is useless to judge, to fear, to reject and to disapprove. A friendly encounter, with ourselves and everything that surrounds us. Both terrestrial and extraterrestrial.
